A few recollections on Benotto tape:

Does anybody remember it being called "disco tape"? It seemed appropriate at the time.

Does anybody remember the Worlds fastest handlebar taper at the old N.Y. Coliseum bike shows? Benotto had a guy who taped and untaped the same handlebar, again and again, faster then the speed of light. By lunch time he was literally up to his knees in used tape.

Somebody mentioned pink Benotto tape. That reminded me of something I did 16 years ago this June. I had been actively racing for 14 years and was planning to retire when my first child was born. Most of the local riders knew about my plans. My first daughter, Clementine, was born on a Thursday. The next evening was our regular Friday night Criterium. As soon as we crossed the finish line I went to my car and grabbed a mussette bag that I had prepared that afternoon. It was filled with sets of pink Benotto tape with the standard header card replaced with a custom one that said "ITS A GIRL!". I rode around the parking lot tossing them to all the riders, officials etc. I thought this was a clever variation on handing out cigars.
