Although the leather looks great and seems strong, it is so stiff with age that it seems impossible to get the straps out of the pedals at the buckle end. Husband Al has even had a go at it, after I've treated them with leather conditioner for several weeks.

My personal advice is always to work around something if it is good original and will be ruined by taking apart.

The hardest thing to work on in my experience is original wheels that are tied and soldered so that you can't disassemble them to polish everything up!
