You really want to fit the cleat for proper position of your foot on the pedal and not to accommodate the clips. I wear size 48 Diadora's with Christophe large and XL clips. I find I have to shim large clips with washers between clip and pedal and the XLs are a bit large with cycling shoes but necessary with sneakers. So you should be ok with large clips if wearing 44's. I have some Specialized clips that are size large but are smaller than Christophe large.
