Stephan,

In 1984 many of us on the west coast were using the Suntour New Winner freewheels teamed up up with a Sedisport chain.

The HOT setup was to take a 126mm Record hub, remove the alloy spacer on the right side, walk over to the parts bin, take out two of the alloy spacers meant for the 120mm hub and place one of those on each side. This had the effect of moving the hub flanges toward a more symmetric orientation about the locknuts. That in turn resulted in less wheel dish.

Then you would use the New Winner ULTRA-6 which had six cogs in the space use by a standard 5-speed. The Sedis chain was thin and worked well on the ULTRA-6.

This rendered a six-cog, bomb-proof wheel. I'm still riding a set like this today.

But Reginas were nice too.

Happy cycling,

Matthew Grimm Shakopee, Minnesota, USA

They aren't pushing any envelopes. They are simply following whatever the current fashion is. Integrated headsets, glue-on stays, and compact geometry. How novel! Make sure you say "aerospace adhesive" so people don't think you are using Elmer's.

Have just now gotten around to stripping down a recently acquired mid to late '50s Peugeot PLX-8.

Bike's current appearance can be seen at http://ebay.com/<blah>

I want to restore it to look like the one shown on Dale's Peugeot page (http://classicrendezvous.com/France/Peug_Touring_1950s.htm).

Yes, I'm serious! The bike really is a diamond in the rough. However...

The tires are crumbling and melted (!) masses of goo on Rigida Chrolux Chromage Superieur Rims (label logo has "Rigida" and "Chromage Superieur" in red text on black fields at the top and bottom of the oval, separated by

"CHROLUX" in white text on teal/faded blue field across the center of oval). Rims and spokes are severely rusted.

Tires were Montlucon 700 Course (whitewalls with blue tread).

I was planning on cutting away the melted tires, removing spokes, then setting about polishing up the rims and then having them rebuilt.

Questions for list francophiles (I know there are a couple of you still out there):

Do you know of a source of replacement Montlucon tires from 50 years ago? (yeah, I know, I'm a hopeless deluded optimist!) If not, what is a suitable, period correct replacement tire that is readily obtainable?

Also, should the rims prove to be too pitted, does anyone know of a source of NOS/mint/good condition Rigida Chrolux Chromage Superieur rims with labels as described?

Finally, the Simplex Competition "suicide" front shifter/derailleur is pretty badly rusted -- anyone have one for sale out there in NOS/mint condition?

Thanks,

My experience was that it worked, but how well is a matter of degree. I found the pairing of the Suntour freewheel with the Sedis chain to be marginal. The relief of the freewheel gears with the splay of the chain plates produces a slow shift that requires a lot of overshift/recentering to get a gearchange. The same chain paired to a Shimano twist tooth freewheel, requires a LOT less lever shifting/recentering to make a gear change. The Suntour combination does work, and if you're willing to put up with it, is acceptable and makes a strong wheel. I stopped using the suntour freewheels when I discovered how well the Shimano twist tooth configuration shifted, despite the standard six speed spacing. Stevan Thomas Alameda, CA

Offered to iBOBs & CR-listees first!

Unpainted, unchromed, unplated, uneverything, Rivendell lugged stem prototype. 25.4 mm quill diameter (for 1 1/8" steerer). No bolts. Lovely patina (i.e. surface rust). Shows a really nice brazing job.

For display purposes only ... makes a great paperweight! Very limited edition since the production models (which will only fit 1" steerers) are on indefinite hold.

Some fine emery cloth, a little Simichrome and some good lovin' rubbin' oughta make this polish up nicely (although it will still be prone to patina-developing)!

$125 shipped.

Dale said that the PMP L cranks had a spider that was swaged to the crank. The set am selling on ebay at the moment has a spider that is bolted to the crank, using 3 small cap screws in to closed holes in the crank. it is very neatly done and allows the spider to be anodised black. Were there two types? Mechanically effective or efficient, well I will pass on that question.
