Bryant Bainbridge wrote some neat things about Specialized, but I'll snip that to get to the Phil stuff:

"But I do have a suggestion. Why don't you simply call Phil Wood? They used to be quite flexible about making special parts and they have a great track record with their BBs." -------------------------------- Just for the record for those of us who occasionally find Phil BBs of vintage age, about a few gnarly limbs in the Phil BB tree:

Early on, Phil cut a sharp groove for a snap ring as the bearing locator. These spindles were reported to fail in torsion at the snap ring groove, which acted as a stress riser.

A few years later, Phil went to a lovely integrated unit which did NOT have interchangeable cartridge bearings. I have only seen this once, and it looked neat, but it does not seem to allow bearing replacements.

Most of the ones I've owned on various tandems and such have used press fit aluminum sleeves as bearing locators; it is pretty easy to change the cartridge bearings on these.

Your mileage may vary...
