Hi gang,

Back when I was a race'in lad me and me mates would always look at the bikes of the hot older guys (usually out of a DC shop that Larry Black worked or owned) for set up tips.

One think that was common was sawing the outer cage off road pedals to convert to narrower (more corner clearance) track style pedals.

Another was to run the toestrap thru the back cage plate (in then out) of campag pedals. This gave a lasso effect and required less cinching down, did not torture the ball of the foot area and improved circulation. Also for one with wide feet it gave a bit of extra length to the strap.

Other super tricks involved marking your stem and seatpost with color coordinated cloth tape and then drilling the tape for lightness.

Do these simple things and you are ready to race.

The Superleggero pedals (black anodized aluminum cages) came out in 1971 without toe strap loops and way before the CPSC safety changes mandated in 1978.

My opinion of how well the loops work? Completely unnecessary and actually not a good thing as far as foot location on the pedal. And why they were eliminated? Another among many examples of Tullio Campagnolo changing parts to improve them.
