This sounds similar to what I want but don't understand exactly-the look of SR yet wide range. Can I borrow a long cage from any long cage wide range derailler, say a Deore, and make the rear, (in my case SR derailler) wide range? Do you cut and glue the NR or SR nameplate on the cage front over the old to make it look like NR or SR from the outside? (I don't get how it works/looks exactly. But I am assuming the SR is essentially the same as the NR)With this cage change (preserving as much of the SR derailler as possible, I gather) and a change in chain (say to Sram 58) could I have made my SR rear derailler work with that new Shimano Megarange hyperglide, the one with alpine gearing where the last cog jumps from the adjacent of about 26 to a whopping 34 teeth? Maybe I am just dreamin and have to modernize with a long range rear derrailler as the lesser evil-That is lesser than having to get rid of my beautiful SR crankset with 53/42 and has those paint filled groves that match my bike.

A few years ago I converted a NR rear derailleur into a long cage der. I'll admit it was probably a pure vanity conversion because I wanted a NR derailleur instead of anything else. Anyway, I borrowed the long cage from a Campy Rally r. der. and installed it on the NR derailleur. I found out that springs on NOS NR derailleurs are incredibly tight. It worked adequately. No machining or other alterations required. Vlad LuskinSFCA
