I am no expert, but have recently done some tubie rim research and shopping. The newest and heaviest GP4 has a label that resembles other recent Mavic rims, a long rectangle (really a parallelogram) with "MAVIC" and that stylized "M" logo on it and a smaller label with info about the stainless eyelets and hard annodizing. The older rims have the traditional red rectangle with the gold diamond "MAVIC" inside and a second gold rectangle with "GP 4" in it. I don't know if there was a transitionary period where the old label was used on the heavier rim or vice versa...

Hope that helps, Doug Van Cleve Chandler, AZ

Everytime I think I know a bit, along comes another item to confound me.

First question. There appears to be two Mavic GP 4 rims out there. An earlier lighter version (around 400 grams) and a later version (the one I am familiar with), designed to be super strong and weigh the same as a middling clincher rim at 480 grams. Is there a way from the labels to detect which is which? Of course if you have a bare rim, you can weigh it, but the ones I have are in built wheels.

2nd question. Does anyone remember a Mavic "Sport" rim? Rim is polished silver, with a rectangular Mavic label, the red with gold inside old style. Hubs on the rims appear to be late 70's, which checks with the rim label (I think). Does anyone know the weight and intended use of these rims?

Thanks again for your collective brains and patience.
