Subject: [CR]brake & derailleur cable thicknesses

well, i just enjoyed a very nice sunny ride this afternoon on my little green bianchi road bike... on the way home, i stopped by two of the local "pro" bike shops for some new brake and derailleur cables. the only thing either could offer were thin shimano cables and a couple of off brand cables, similarly thin. all running between $1.99-$2.99 each.

it appears i have some very thick cables on my brakes right now (modolo speedy), probably campagnolo installed sometime around the early nineties. the current derailleur cables are not as thick, but certainly thicker than the ones offered me today.

what gives? one guy said "all cables are the same..." when i inquired about finding a thicker set. he looked at me blankly when i mentioned 1.8 sized cables... what's the consensus on cable thickness? does it matter? anybody know where i can find the thick ones online?

thanks
