Subject: [CR]Cirque Scrambling, Arc En Ciel rim questions

Like Joe B-Z, I'm spending my nights trying to get the bikes in shape to travel to Greesnboro. An experiment with the van discloses that four bikes will fit (luggage may be optional!) so the list of bike attendees now is up to 4. 1st '54 Major Nichols 2nd '79 Trek 510, 3rd '81-2 Marinoni Special and 4th '70s (as close as I can get) Benotto. All these bikes were reasonably well sorted out prior to this week, so of course I made major mechanical changes to all four necessitating much fiddling and fine tuning, just when I should be logging road miles to perfect my spin.

The biggest fiddle is trying to finish a new set of wheels for the Nichols, consisting of Pellisier high flange hubs (thanks, Joe B-Z) laced to Arc en Ciel rims. Spokes are DT 14/15 butted. The front wheel came out fine, but the rear, thanks to lower spoke tension used out of respect to a 30 plus year old rim design won't hold true. This is a double walled tubular rim with double eyelets, but it also is made of fairly soft non extruded aluminum. How much tension will these rims stand? As much as a modern double wall clincher? Or is this rim too light/and or soft for a 230+ lb rider? The scuttlebutt back in the 70s was that the Arc en Ciel was a very tough racing rim for big riders, but these things are all relative.

Thanks for any imput.
