Martin -

I have a couple of rather old (but VERY comfortable) B66's with the "cardboard liner", and have seen them for sale on eBay at one time or another (and on one model or another). And I think I recall hearing them referred to as "rain guards" or "rain shields" or something like that.

The shields are not the usual thing ...but not all that rare, either (else, I doubt I'd have acquired a couple of saddles w/ 'em: granted, that B66's hardly have the cachet of a Swallow, though they're fab' on old Sports & roadsters).

I suspect Hilary or Mick or one of the English lister's can elucidate much beyond my feeble Brooks store of knowledge.

\r?\n> I've seen lots of Brooks saddles and, perhaps I'm not very observant,

\r?\n> but I don't recall ever seeing one with what appears to be a factory

\r?\n> installed cardboard under the top leather. At first I thought the liner

\r?\n> was also leather but the fingernail test indicates that it's paper or

\r?\n> some composite material.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> The saddle is an oval logo "Champion B17 Narrow" which has seen some

\r?\n> hard use.

\r?\n> Is the liner unusual or am I finally in the grip of Old Timers disease?
