I think you have this exactly right Steven. They are uncommon. But in my opinion they are not rare. They were used with a Brooks B17 Competition Standard "Mod. Campagnolo" (stamped in a small oval on the saddle top) saddle.

The narrow clamp allowed mega adjustability fore and aft as you said, but the down side was that the narrow bracing angle lets the saddle rock from side to side (voice of experience).

They date from the late 50s and early 60s and came stock on Legnanos from that period. I would guess that the few Brooks Mod. Campagnolo saddles I have seen are take-offs from Legnanos, being replaced by the extremely popular Unicanitor plastic saddle (intro'd in 1959).

I'm not sure if there was a corresponding narrow rail Unicanitor saddle for this seat post or not, but it would be a simple matter to substitute the normal clamps and use the normal frame rail Unicanitor.
