Bartali's bike in the '49 Tour used a Cervino rear mech with a 4-speed freewheel, and a (Simplex?) front mech with two chainrings. Coppi's bike had (Simplex?) mechs front and rear, again with 4-speed freewheel, so they both had "8-speed" drivetrain.

This reminds me of the 1983 discussion. Has anyone out there ridden the earlier 2 speed type? Is it easy to change gears without stopping? From what I've read, you have to move the rear axle and backpeddle? http://www.chiamamicitta.com/n316/pirroni.htm
