He'd wrap his hand around the thin portion of one of the butted main
tubes.
The best bike mechanic in town sometimes taps along a tube and claims he can tell about the butting by the differences in sound along it. I sure can't hear it, but I have trusted this guy every since I've known him.
Of course, just because one knows a lot about bikes does not mean that they are completely bullshit free. There have been some hints of this on bike lists, even
