Today I got my 17 year old to do some real miles with me. We had a great time and he is thinking he'd really like to do RAGBRAI with us in 04. We've ridden together a bunch of times, and its one of the main activities we enjoy together. I'd say he will be able to do the ride for sure.

He saved his pennies for his first road bike, an aluminum, Sora equipped, mass manufactured bike, and has been both patient and fascinated with my own bikes. I'd like to surprise him when he returns from his summer trip by having a bike project all of his own for us to work on. The only caveat is that I'm going to need to spread the frame to 130mm - poor kid has no interest in down tube shifters (you can lead a horse to water....) and I'll probably build it up with a Tiagra triple group. So something a little out of the time line would not be bad, but decent, lugged, light steel. Somehow I feel thats better than buying him a car <g>.
