During that bleak and ancient epoch we did repair our own tubulars. Of course, we didn't use the little needle supplied in the repair kits except in the most dire of situations. In the comfort of our homes, we used one of these: http://thevermontshopper.com/SpeedyStitcher/speedystitcher.html In fact, I still have mine and perhaps we could arrange a big demonstration of the techniques sometime for everyone in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area. Having said that, I must admit that often the best thing to do with a punctured tubular is to completely remove the tube, patch it, and then use it with a clincher.
