Warmest greetings

I drilled an SR stem in the early 80's. I drilled through the stem with a bit just large enough for the cable to pass through. Then picked a bit just a bit larger than the cable with a ferrell (SP). I drilled it 3/8" deep. I located the first hole by sighting the entrance and exit of the hole in the stem so that the brake cable was parallel to the head tube.

Not broken yet with many miles on it. By the by I am not a willowy lightweight.

I have seen drilled GB stems in the Ron Kitching catalog and I bet there are some list members who have one floating around.

There are also some brake hangers that clamped on. Do not know if they are still available.

One of the first modifications I did to a bike with a Mafac hanger was to replace it with a Weinmann one. I gained an adjusting screw and it was much stiffer.

Have Universal 68 and NR brakes but if I want to stop I use Weinmann, Universal and Zeus centerpulls.

> For various reasons, I want to use a set of center pull brakes (Mafac Racers) on a frame that has a Campy NR headset installed and no room for a normal Centerpull housing stop in the headset. The fork appears to be trimmed too short (threads on the lock nut only 2/3 engaged and no spacers in the headset) to accomodate even the thin Mafac hanger. I can replace the headset with a lower stack headset like a Ritchey that would leave room for the hanger, but that option doesn't really appeal to me. I'd like to keep the appearance fairly traditional and early 60's. Hence the Mafacs and Campy headset.
