Same for me too; I only met Dave once, but it was in 1972 or 73 when he was touring Schwinn dealers to get product feedback as part of his job. We took a pleasant lunch discussing Schwinn products, but we spent just as much time talking bike racing. Even as a young man, despite his recent cycling achievements, he was totally without swagger or pretense, a fun, energetic guy to chat with (unlike the other stuffy "suits" who did this job) and one who genuinely listened to what this lowly mechanic had to say. It was a great afternoon. With his more recent joining of CR, we exchanged notes on topics of shared interest from time to time and I enjoyed this correspondence very much. He was always curious, yet respectful at the same time. A true gentleman and a fine fellow.
As so many others have expressed today, he will be sorely missed and our world is indeed worse for his passing. Sigh...
