I don't know if I ever met Dave Staub, but I immediately recognized his name when he first joined the list awhile back. Somehow, I learned his name back in my Schwinn mechanic days and may have run into him at a bike show or Schwinn event, I just don't know. When he joined, I somehow knew that he was the one in that famous old track photo, too. So why bore the list with all this wishy-washy reminiscing? Because Dave was one of those people who had been in the sport so long that he was widely known and respected, even by a lowly wrench. When I heard Dave's name, I immediately thought of Schwinn, track bikes and Paramounts. I communicated a few times off-list with Dave about Schwinn trivia and considered it an honor when he graciously replied.
Meeting Dave was one of the reasons that I really wanted to get to the Cirque this year, but that just wasn't in the cards or the schedule. His photo was one of the first that I looked for when people who attended started posting them. Not getting to meet Dave is one my life's losses. To be on a P13 in California, riding with Dave and Brian--now that would be sweet.
