Hi Chris, You shouldn't have to remove the wheel adjusters completely, the trick is to move the wheel back just far enough that the freewheel doesn't interfere with the derailleur. I have in the past used the shorter screws from the short drop outs. This allows you to have less of the adjuster sticking out the back of the drop out making it less likely that the screw will get bent.
