Subject: [CR]Raleigh International Trivia

1. Weinmann centerpulls and sidepulls may share hardware with dia-compe, including levers and the ferrules you need for a cable stop at the top of the lever can be purchased new from http://www.loosescrews.com, and you can even get a full weinmann NOS white cable with the correct ferrules from them. There is a special guy on the east coast who sells NOS 'internatinoal calipers with the large drillium holes and as far as i know these only came on raleigh international and competition models so they are hard to find. If you need NOS weinmann calipers or hangers i can sell you some. I also have QR levers, but no spare drilliums -- please contact me off-list.

2. Carlton hoods appear on ebay several times a year, sometimes alone, mostly with levers, and sometimes on raleigh grand prix's. They are uncomfortable and undesirable to use. I pitched mine on my 1972 grand prix and got weinmann ones. Until they appear, you might get soft generic white hoods from http://www.sjscycles.com which are NEW and i'm sure they are stocking these items just to service the carlton / raleigh bikes remaining in england; you might want to buy two sets because when these go out of print that's all folks.

3. my '74 raleigh rustoleum-deprived international was almost completely original; so i know exactly what the small parts should be. handlebar tape is white plastic with holes; bar plugs are milremo "star" (has a big star on it), rims are AVA for '73 and '74, they were weinmann for '72. These are "sprint" in the catalogue which means tubular in England. Tires are "Raleigh Nylon Extra 270 made in japan". Seatpost bolt is a very unusual allen bolt on '73 - '75 raleighs, and there is a picture associated with the PRO in the '76 catalogue online (www.bulgier.net). No chance to get it because its a raleigh proprietary part. If you cannot get the seat bolt, then substitute raleigh "R" or Carlton "C" nuts and a regular bolt - these show up on ebay in the chopper section about twice a week. Otherwise, a generic bolt would be accurate; again http://www.loosescrews.com has generic 19 mm bolts for $4.50. Toe clips were christophe special, and straps were generic white. I saw a 1974 international recently (thanks, sterling) and the crankset bolts and caps were all "Patent Campagnolo". I don't know whats going on with this because mine seem to be "Brev Campagnolo". Skewers should be flat and chainring should not have a peg (e.g. what later became a "gransport" chainring is the correct ring.) Gear ratio is 52T/43T on mine. my inner and outer rings had the same heavy corrosion so i presume they're correct.

4. If your bike is a 1973, it will have the weird capella lugs with a "tooth" sticking up and down at the very front of the bike. See the catalogues on http://www.bulgier.net for details. See http://www.retroraleighs to date your frame. Anyway, the 1973 and earlier bikes had GB stem with bolt protruding; the 1974 and later had recessed bolts. Also, handlebars on 1973 and later are generic raleigh 38cm, you'll know you have the right ones if they say NOTHING ANYWHERE and are so narrow would ever want to have them. My handlebars "flare" by at least 1" on each side ( e.g. / \ ). The 1972's and earlier often had GB handlebars with pictures of england and (GB), on the entire line of raleigh bikes - these are stunning handlebars. Raddoneur versions with england, appropriate for the gran sport are available NOS from http://www.sjscycles.com, while they last. Also at harris cyclery. Good luck with your restoration, and please post pictures when you finish the job !!!
