I don't think they changed the model number, but there were definite variations, and I have several of them. This crank was made from the early 70's or maybe even late 60's, to the late 80's. That means it spanned the transition in about 1983 from old Stronglight extractor thread to standard 22mm thread, as well as the gradual disappearance of French pedal thread. Early 99s were squarish and polished like a mod 93, had Stronglight extractor thread, and most often French pedal thread. The latest examples are rounded and anodized like a mod 106, have 22mm extractor thread, and most likely English pedal thread. Any combination of thread could and did occur, and Ive purchased used cranks where the arms were mismatched. Nothing like a crank with 22mm extractor thread and French pedal thread on the right arm and Stronglight extractor thread and English pedal thread on the left arm.

Another Stronglight model that had these strange combinations was the mod 104. Though not introduced until the late 70's or early 80's, it also spanned the extractor and pedal thread transition.

That bring up an interesting question. The model 49 was made for several decades, maybe even into the 80's. Anyone ever seen a mod 49 with 22mm extractor thread? I haven't.
