I assume this is how these projects go. Bought an old bike. Rode it for a bit. Started messing around with it, hoping to just make minor adjustments. Ended up taking everything off and apart. Broke a piece. Bought a few new parts. Realized that this is a longer term deal than I anticipated. Glad I didn't sell the late '90s Lemond after all--need something to ride while I work on this bike.
So today's worry is that the Campy SR cranks are bottoming out on the spindle. The crank arms are tight, but I am not loving the chain line. Are my cranks toast? The spindle is a Campy steel. I can't remember the numbers on it, and it took awhile to get the BB adjusted right, so I would prefer not to take it apart again if I can help it. I know, I should have written it down when I had the chance, but here we are.
I see several possibilities, none of them pleasing
1. New crank arms 2. New longer spindle 3. New narrower freewheel. Current one is an obviously unoriginal Shimano 600 6 speed. I could go to a Suntour Ultra 6 3. Respace and redish the rear wheel 4. Don't shift onto the small cog
Once again I find myself in need of your sage advice
