Don't think they are 77 degrees, maybe 75 or 74, but that was steep for the era. They did have long chainstays compared to Italian bikes of the era. The same sort of geometry can be seen on LeJeune and other French bikes of the era. The long chainstays were partly to allow fenders to be fitted - the PX-10 still had dropout eyelets when these were disappearing from Italian bikes. I've heard it claimed that the long stays aided in climbing and descending whereas the shorter stays on Italian bikes were better suited to sprints and flat courses. This somehow seems intuitively reasonable, but I can't cite any scientific evidence that long stays would be better in the mountains.
