<snip> Hey you folks, isn't it amazing that we have guys like Jamie and Peter Johnson (others?) in our little group that can just machine an obscure and essential part like this? I am knocked out at the ability these guys have to just go back in the shop and knock out an odd part! Shades of the Wright brothers.

When I was 12 or 13 I observed that all the nice bikes on the rides had down tube shifters and bare cables. I looked at my huffy and sighed. I had stem shifters and fully enclosed cables that flopped around too loosely held by the plastic clips.

I found my joy at the bike shop where I purchased suntour dt shifters with the white plastic hoods. When I installed them I found that the rear stop was too small for the huffmeister's stays.

I showed my dad my problem. Next day he came home from work with a problem solver. He milled a piece of brass to fit into the fender eye and then drilled and threaded it to accept an adjusting bolt like the one on my centerpull brakes. All out of brass so as not to rust.

Miss my dad much.
