I have a set of those hubs too which I got from Lickton's Cycle City about 25 years ago. The story as I heard it was that Schwinn, in their infinite wisdom, thought they could improve on Campy's hub, so they counterbored the spoke holes. But then they started having spoke breakage problems, so instead of junking all those already counterbored hubs, redrilled them to Campy specs in between the spoke holes. Then, to save face, they drilled out the original holes bigger, so as to look like they had tried to lighten them up, which was of course the popular thing to do in the 70s. Anyone have a different version of the story?
