Subject: [CR]Steel Tubing

I am hoping that someone on the list can help me. Earlier on this week I went and saw 2 steel bikes that were for sale. One was an Olmo and the other was a Gianni Motta. I would put the age of the bikes as mid to late 80's. Both had ribbed tubing but a deeper ridge than I have seen before. I must admit that I have a passion for the ribbed tubing. Regretably both bikes had been resprayed so no tubing sticker on them. The Motta was a frame and fork so had a look down the seat tube and saw no internal reinforcing. The seat tube diameter I thought was closer to 26.8 than 27.2. The Motta frame and fork appeared to be very heavy when lifted. Can anyone enlighten me on the ribbed tubing - what is the base tubing SLX,SL or Aelle. Can you use a thin walled tubing as in SL and put in the indentations or is it generally a thick walled tubing that is used. Does anyone have any catalogues from Columbus that details this type of tubing - all my catalogues only list the straight tubing. Thanks Phil Grizic Durban - South Africa
