The Mavic RD, used with corncob freewheels (for example 13-14-15-16-17-18) and with the cage height set up properly, made for what I still think to be the very best friction shifter combination ever made. I have never been a great fan of the retro-friction shift levers however, as they had too small a barrel for my liking, requiring too much movement of the lever to effect a shift.-- Steven Maasland Moorestown, NJ

I've never been happy with the small barrel of the Simplex shifters that go with the Mavic groupo. Campy Record 'C' shifters, the only non Mavic component on my Cinelli built Centurion make the shifting that much crisper. And that bolt was a bitch to break loose to adjust the cage for my wider (13-28) setup. Works great tho.
