I agree 100%, I just differ a bit on the definition of a great machine. I think for most folks a steep-angled racing machine is inappropriate. The short fast geometry is great for a pro, but wouldn't a machine that is built of the same materials to the same standards of quality with somewhat more relaxed angles be a better match for the recreational rider (which I guess is most of us, right?). It would be more comfortable, certainly. I love the sleek looks of a thoroughbred racing machine, but when I ponder the practicalities of day to day riding, I find myself attracted more and more these days to bikes like Singer, Herse, Rivendell, Toei... and wonder how many others out there feel the same way.

Same goes for cars... while the idea of driving a racing machine on the street is at first intoxicating, over the long run I think I'd tire of a vehicle that had no radio, turn signals, mufflers, or trunk, with an interior put together with sheet metal and pop rivets, and was so low that it scraped it's bottom every time I pulled out of my driveway (to say nothing of an engine that only begins to run well at 50mph over the speed limit...).
