I guess this is another one of those "definition" questions. Just what is period correct? Are we talking about restoring a bike to the condition it may have been in in the catalog? Many bikes were purchased as frames only and components specified or added by the buyer. Also, a bike may have gone through several transitions in it's lifetime, so what period are we talking about being correct? I think it also has to do with the purpose of obtaining the bike. If it's mainly for show and ocassional riding, the original equipment may be fine, but if it's more for riding and functionality, some upgrades may be necessary. I have some old bikes that originally came with 27 inch 1 1/4 clinchers, but when I go out on the road I swap for more modern, lighter weight tires. Another thing that might be considered is availibility. Some of the older parts are just not available anymore or available at premium prices. And while it may be desireable to replicate an original paint job, todays paints are more durable. Originality is the ultimate in any restoration, but some trade offs may be necessary as long as they don't distract from the bikes overall look.
