La Prealpinas were still on the market in Italy a few years ago. The principle reason they disappeared from USA market was the lack of gutters on new cars.. The original LP models were one-size-fits-all; the rails were expandable in width and the "feet" went in the roof line gutter. When "aero" designs started being produced by car makers, this design became obsolete. The more expensive Yakima, Thule, Saris racks that dominate now have a wide range of fittings for almost any car. Actually roof racks sales are tumbling any way nowadays due to the huge popularity of receiver hitch mounted bike carriers (on SUVs!)
