"I'd like to say one of my favorites to brows through for a good laugh is "Bikes and Riders" by James Wagenvoord in 1972. It a nice book for kids and has some nice pics about racing in New York in the early 70s. When ever I see the pictures on p.24 and p.157 of the guy being taught by his friends how to ride a bike. It's nice to see people of that age (mid to late 20s) learning to ride a bike for the first time. Alas the pants the "teacher" is wearing just makes me break out laughing and thankful that I was only 3 years old when this book was published."

I agree, those pictures are pretty funny... I was 17 when the book was published. Since the book is New York City oriented it sort of chronicles my world.

My old friend Steve Arbetman appears in a few of the race photos that you mention. In fact I know quite a few of the riders pictured. Steve is in the race that features Dave Chauner winning. He is the one with the long beard and dark glasses. Talk about styles changing. He started racing in 1960. Just last month Steve moved to Ireland. Before he left he brought his early Richard Sachs to my shop for a Phil Wood bottom bracket and a Chris King head set. He figured it was going to be a while before he could bring it in for repacking. If any of you remember him and would like his address let me know. I'm sure he would love to hear from you...

There is also a partial picture of Preston Handy riding the derny that was built by Corky Guilbransen. I discussed this bike on the list a couple years ago. I guess technically I still own it although it is in the possession of the Kissena Club. It needs a bit of attention to get it up and running. Any volunteers?
