"Before Suntour, and before Reedy and Weyless, there were ER pedals. East Rochester Tool and Die. They made a titanium and steel version which used sealed bearings and were very light. I had a set of these on my 18-lb MIT-brother-designed and built SortaKlein in 1977. He has the bike now with the pedals still on it. I think both the Suntour and Reedy designs came from this, but I suppose Reedy might have been the first one."

With this prompt, I certainly recall the "Rochester" term being used as precursor to the Suntour. Heck, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and this industry has seen much more of this virtue than of innovation. :-) I used to have the Weyless, and would love to get another pair, but still salute whoever originated the concept -- and Suntour for giving it such a presence in the market, with such nice execution.
