This is not that easy to describe but it use to be common practice when riding fixed to put on the single front brake and lift the rear wheel simultaneously off the ground you then reverse pedal, then drop the back wheel down quickly. It wasn't all that unkind on the rear cover and was really effective. A secure lock-ring is obviously essential. There has been a lot of letters and discussion about this form of braking in some parts of the British cycling press recently especially in the Fellowship Gazette.
