Subject: [CR]How to adjust old simplex skewers?

I just got an old PX that has the old style simplex skewers. With the slender lever that comes out of the center of the cam body. And with both a plastic wing nut and knurled nut on the other end to adjust the tension.

The wing nut is threaded, and then there is a small spring, and then there is the knurled metal piece that threads on the skewer. And finally the regular conical spring, axle, other conical spring and the cam body.

So, I do I adjust these? I don't want to damage them, so now I have the knurled piece adjusted right, and the wing nut just loosely screwed against the small spring. What is the right thing to be doing here?

Finally, do these plastic wing nuts tend to last?

Thanks
