Sure Chuck, now it sounds like you're on my side of this issue.

Why bemoan the fact that a high tech road bike that is light and racy IS light and racy?

Nobody holds a gun to these fools heads who buy one and use it for some purpose completely at odds with reality.Sounds to me like some people are bitter at the wrong parties. The fact that the western world is obsessed with beauty, technology, greed, status, and showing off, isn't the fault of the modern bike industry.

Should we bring forth suit against McDonalds for making us fat? (oh wait, i think people are!)

I just don't see that classic lugged steel bikes are history because of some fault of the bike industry. Choices are made, things move on.

The fact that you CAN still ride a 30 or 50 year old bike that was once designed for racing is no measure for modern bikes. Every product today is so "purpose built". Heck, this laptop i'm typing on is so light, it makes a crappy paperweight!
