Thank you for your E-mail of 27th March regarding coding on Brooks saddles.

It was around 1988 when Brooks stopped date stamping the frames and started to date stamp underneath the leather.

When the side flaps were stamped inside it was made up of a code denoting the month and year of manufacture. Unfortunately the "code" book is now lost so we cannot decipher the actual codes used at that time. It is, sadly, not quite as simple as A=January, B=February etc. This 'flap' stamping changed to the frame stamping around the 1960's although there was an 'overlap' period where both the leather and the frame were stamped.

Our current method of stamping Brooks saddles is as you state, number for the year surrounding a letter for the month.

I hope the above goes some way in answering your questions, but please do not hesitate to contact us if you require any further information.

Yours faithfully
