I have a number of older bikes and have a variety of materials used for the brake pads: leather on a 30's roadster, the Universal blocks like on the 40's Stucchi with thread reinforcements, 'regular' black rubber, softer red rubber blocks...
I don't think there was any special attention given to wood rims instead of alloy or steel ones.
