Tire Sizes - Confessions Of A Fool

So , I got to thinking about what I'd written yesterday . And I actually went and checked . I don't know how I could have forgotten the real facts so completely !

That wonderful 1948 Carlton Cycles Python , with Sturmey Archer AM rear hub , and dropped-style handlebar by GB . . .

Has tyres in size 26 x 1 1/4 = 597 mm .

Well of course it does !

What was I thinking ?

Genuine Michelins , as a matter of fact .

Tyres marked : MICHELIN MADE IN ENGLAND 5 32 - 597 ( 26 X 1 1/4 SPORTS ) INFLATE UP TO 60 P.S.I.

With a date code of Y 14 Z

Tubes marked : 26 - 5M AIRSTOP MICHELIN MADE IN ITALY ( 650 x 32A 26 x 1 3/8 x 1 1/4 ) 28 / 32 - 590 - 584 - 597

With those wonderful all-metal , all-threaded , valve stems , and mysterious valves which look sort of like a Woods valve converted at the factory to allow a Presta sized pump .

Apologies to Peter Paine , just in case he read what I wrote yesterday , and wondered how I could have gotten things so wrong !

And to Hilary Stone , who surely would have known the truth of the matter , just from his vast store of knowledge , if I'd been too lazy to look at the actual tyres , and asked him instead !

And thanks to Andrew Muzi , for providing the spark which got my memories going correctly again !

I'll try harder to pay more attention in the future !

Cheers ,
Raoul Delmare
