Jim,

Perfect choice for a date for the ride. I'm sorry I won't be there.

Daves' brother Don has let me know that the family is planning a Celebration of Daves' life in the Bay area on Sat. Aug. 23, 2003. Time and place to be announced; the date was tentative but I think probably will be the day. Listmembers will be welcome to attend.

A few corrections from my previous post regarding the memorial in Orange, CA. The person who I thought was Daves' brother Stan was actually Daves' brother Dons' son. Many apparently make the same mistake, since Vince looks a lot like Dave. Sorry for the error.

Secondly, I incorrectly stated that Dave had never been on a tandem, which wasn't true. Don told me that Dave had ridden tandem in the past and actually did some racing on one. I confused Dave saying that he's never driven a tandem, which being small rider is no surprise since the smaller rider is almost always in the rear, with him never having been on one. I got the steering job on the Schwinn track tandem on account of my previous pilot experience. I made Dave a little nervous with a little clowning on the slippery track; in time he would have relaxed once he was convinced that I had no intention of crashing on a tandem. Until the stoker gets to that point they are at the pilots' mercy, unless they have no fear of crashing! The scary thing about that bike was even as small as Dave and I were, the bike was super cramped. I can't imagine how those guys rode that thing. Dave said that the stocker was supposed to rest his head on the pilots' back. Humm. Not exactly built for comfort!

I wish I could join the N. Cal group for the celebration and ride. Have a safe and fun ride and raise a glass to Dave for me.
