Subject: [CR]Schwinn Super Record Tires

Hey There Bob ,

At last !!

Something I actually know something about !!

Cool !!

I remember quite distinctly when Schwinn brought out the Super Record Tires . This was during the time when my old friend Bruce and I were trading turns as manager of "The Kingsville Bicycle Clinic" , in Kingsville , Texas . The shop was both an Authorized Raleigh Dealership , and also an Authorized Schwinn Dealership .

( an unusual combination , something that BOTH companies tried hard to avoid - sort of like selling Fords & Chevrolets , under the same roof . . . )

That absolutely would HAVE to have been in the late 1970's , the question is , which particular year - 1976 - 1977 - 1978 - 1979 ????

And the missing piece of the puzzle is . . .

Different Super Record Tires ! ! !

The labels were ; Red , Blue , Yellow .

They were different weights .

They were all steel beaded .

There were at least two different widths , perhaps three , but perhaps only two widths .

And with that , we now look for the old Schwinn Consumer catalogs , of which I only have a few random years . And of course , the tire listings are probably on the last page or two . But ! There might be an extra page anywhere in the catalog . Meaning that I need to look at each and every page . Cool!! Fun!! Love the minutia of research !! So ,

1974 - last page , 54 - High Pressure Le Tour Gumwall High Pressure Sports Touring Gumwall Puff Gumwall Breeze Sports Touring ( all black ) Straightside Sports Touring ( all black ) Westwind ( all black , brick-tread , balloon ) Tractor ( all black , trials-type , balloon ) four different Sting Ray tires plus introducing the new "Schwinn Reflectorized Tires!" in four sizes , including 27 x 1 1/4

Schwinn Deluxe Touring Paramounts ( both 10 & 15 speeds ) came with "H. P. Le Tour tires"

Schwinn Professional Road Racing Paramount uses "Wide selection of custom equipment."

Schwinn Professional Track Paramount uses quote tubular 27" x 1" silk sew-up track tires unquote

Finally , every bicycle , and every accessory , is listed on the separate price sheet , right down to locks and horns and oils and tire gauges - but no tire prices - and dealers know why - freight & competition from other nearby stores , can cause drastic changes in tire prices !!

1975 - tires on back inside cover , page 63 , specifications exactly as 1974 , except Reflectorized is no longer new

Schwinn Deluxe Touring Paramounts ( both 10 & 15 speeds ) came with quote 27" x 1 1/4" Schwinn-Approved high-pressure LeTour clincher type tires" [ the space between the words Le Tour seems to come and go at random ]

Schwinn Professional Road Racing Paramount uses quote 27" Clement "50" cotton tubular tires with butyl tubes unquote

Schwinn Professional Track Paramount uses "Clement track tires"

1976 - tires on back inside cover , page 63 , entire layout exactly as 1975

Schwinn Deluxe Touring Paramounts ( both 10 & 15 speeds ) came with quote 27" x 1 1/8" Schwinn Super Record gumwall unquote

Schwinn Professional Road Racing Paramount uses quote 27" Clement "50" cotton tubular tires with butyl tubes unquote

Schwinn Professional Track Paramount uses "Clement #9 track cotton tires and tubes. #3 silk optional at extra cost."

1978 - tires on back inside cover , page 63 - Well , it would appear that the change occurred either here in 1978 , or the year before in 1977 - I might guess it happened in 1977 - Because it does not look like a high publicity , "introducing-NEW" , kind of thing in 1978 . EXCEPT that the Super Record tires were listed WITHOUT any extra publicity , on the components list of the 1976 Deluxe Touring Paramounts ! So , I'd say the Super Record tires were introduced quietly , partially , in 1976 . And let's find a 1977 catalog to confirm that they received some publicity in 1977 !

Tires listed in the order listed in the Schwinn catalog :

27 x 1 1/4 Puff Gumwall 27 x 1 1/4 High Pressure Sports Touring Gumwall 27 x 1 1/4 High Pressure Le Tour Gumwall

27 x 1 1/8 High Pressure Super Record Gumwall ( 300 - 310 grams ) [ this one is RED label , with no weight listed on label of tire ]

27 x 1 1/8 High Pressure Super Record Gumwall ( 250 grams ) [ this one is YELLOW label , with 250 clearly listed on label ]

700 x 28C High Pressure Super 700 Gumwall ( 300 - 310 grams ) [ this one is BLUE label , clearly does not use the word Record , just labeled "Super 700" ]

700 x 28C High Pressure Super 700 Gumwall ( 250 grams ) [ this one is GREEN label , clearly does not use the word Record , just labeled "250 Super 700" ]

"Sew-up tire (230 grams)" [ RED label reads "Schwinn Nylon Butyl 230" ]

"Sew-up tire (270 grams)" [ YELLOW label reads "Schwinn Nylon Butyl 270" ]

"Sew-up tire (300 grams)" [ BLUE label reads "Schwinn Nylon Butyl 300" ]

Schwinn Deluxe Touring Paramounts use quote 27" x 1 1/8" Schwinn Super Record gumwall tires unquote

Schwinn Road Racing Paramount uses "Campionato Del Mundo silk tires. Small flange hubs optional. Schwinn Super 700C rims and tires optional."

Schwinn Professional Track Paramount uses "Campagnolo large flange hubs. Schwinn-Approved 330 gram alloy rims with reinforcing ferrules. Clement #9 track cotton tires. #3 silks optional at extra cost."

Well , that's typically confusing . The tires are listed from heaviest to lightest , until we get to the sew-ups , which are listed the other way around .

On a Super Record 27 inch gumwall , Red is the heaviest .

On a Schwinn sew-up , Red is the lightest .

Typically senseless and confusing .

And I'm curious about what came after 1978 ?

I feel certain that there were Super Record tires in different widths . Besides , you actually have some in 27" x 1" !!

And Schwinn Super Record tires were not really what I would call "gumwalls" . They were much more like today's modern tires with different colors of material . The sidewalls on Super Record tires seemed to be made of the same material as the tread , but in a different color . Not at all like the soft & sticky sides of "gumwalls" .

And obviously , my memories of sizes and label colors did not entirely agree with the 1978 catalog .
