Joe, when you let up pedaling, the spokes clear the derailleur. When you pedal (hard) with the pulling spokes coming from the outside the flanges, the drive side spokes graze the derailleur. When you pedal (hard) with pulling spokes coming from between the flanges, the drive side spokes move away from the derailleur. They do this at the last cross where the spokes are interlaced.
In the end, with the proper use of freewheel spacers between the hub and the freewheel, none of this mattered.
