I never tried that on a leather saddle, but back in the day, I usedta butcher Unicas.

I would drill 'em out like swiss cheese, not so much for weight as to make them more flexible and for "breathing" to avoid perspiration build up. I also used to scuff up the tops with a hacksaw blade to make 'em less slippery.
