Subject: [CR]Was chrome-plating: Now: Triple plating

Jan asked:

"Beyond the smooth finish, how do we get durability and longevity in chrome-plated parts?"

Answer:

"Triple chrome plating" or "show chrome plating" means copper plating followed by nickle plating followed by chrome plating.

Copper and nickle plating is ductile, can be relatively thick, and can be polished. The chromium is very thin, very hard, and is there for its brilliance. Chromium does rust and should be waxed.

I personally prefer maintaining the original finish on a classic bike, even if the chrome is rusty. As an avid antique collector, I've learned the value of "patina".

Refinishing = no patina = less value
