I think it was Jan who already mentioned that they were used in the '50s. They were still sometimes used - as a kind of cost saving measure - on some nice Italian bikes in the '60s. For example, it was common to see a bike made from Columbus tubing with Campy derailleurs, Universal brakes, Magistroni cranks and Sheffield pedals. Unfortunately, I think the value of a used set is going to be difficult to ascertain. They seem to be sort of an unloved component.
