MONTHLERY was the site of one of the BICYCLE LAND SPEED RECORDS,I do not recall the rider but recall 135 MPH and much bravado.
RUST coatings, the ones I have experience with, are AEROSOL type, darkness of converted rust is dependant on how much rust is present , rust makes material look purplish.remove all loose rust you can by brushing with a nylon(soft) brush.Coating left after process is a epoxy primer type material that can be almost clear.Look for products that use alcohol base as these are the ones I have the most experience with and they work well.
Disclaimer is be sure and try in spot that will not be noticed etc.............................
