I may have told this story before but after Ann's story earlier, I thought it appropriate to retell. Sorry Dale, no specific vintage content.

I was new in town and visiting bike shops. The shop closest to my home had a good reputation and when I visited for the first time, was impressed by the quality and quantity of new high end bikes and components. I am strictly a vintage fan but was looking for a shop to establish a relationship with to buy parts etc.

I am standing at the counter looking in the display case and I overhear a conversation between the salesguy and a rather large (over 6 feet and 250 pounds) customer debating the merits of buying a new bottom bracket that saved some amount of grams of weight over the one he had. Seeing I was standing there, the customer turned to me and asked what I thought he should do. I responded that he would realize the same weight savings on his bike if he skipped lunch for a few days and save several hundred $ to boot. Needless to say, the customer was laughing and the salesguy was not.

They are just bikes and we should never forget that.
