You wrote: OK CR listmembers. I have some Super Champion Mixte rims. They're box-section clincher rims with a dull sand-blasted looking aluminum finish. They have very nice labels -- a shiny red ellipse with gold "SUPER CHAMPION" and a much smaller black "made in France." They're quirky, though. Where most clincher rims have a swollen bead on the inside of the very edge of the rim, the Mixte's have a curved flange that looks kinda like the outermost 3mm or so of a tubular rim. They feel a little heavier than my Mavic MA-2's (I've got a pair of those too). Can anybody tell me anything about these rims? Anyone with experience using them? Most importantly -- do they hang onto a tire OK? Can I build them into wheels and ride them with confidence? Thanks. --- David Faulkner in Sacramento, CA where the mornings are cold and damp, but the afternoons are just made for riding

My response:

I used Super Champion Mixte rims up until two years ago on my PX 10. The previous responding message threads seem correct but I would like to bring up two points:

1. I think J Hook clinchers are the tires you use on Mixtes. Those types are not available anymore, I don't think. The SC Mixte are not adaptable to modern wire beaded tires. I would not even take a chance at mounting wire-bead tires on them for fear of inner tube talc blowing up in my face..

2. I rode on Vitoria tubular cross tires. 28mm or 30mm, can't remember which size. The problem is you don't have an adequate area to apply cement on the surface of the rims which always worried me. I never rolled a tire but, as they say in this litigious society, be careful.

They are hanging in my basement.
