You hit it alright. Per a discussion with Tom Kellog regarding my $86 Signature "Touring", he indicated that the first line of numbers correspond to frame size, model number and paint code. Not so arcane after all. 500 was the touring model code. I should note that this is a much quicker bike that the touring designation would connote and is a true delight to ride.

Thank heavens for (some) eBay auctions with fuzzy picture(s) and fuzzier descriptions.
