I suspect this really is the best way to ship from the UK to the USA. For one thing, you can track the package from both the ParcelForce and the USPS Web sites. Right now, the ParcelForce system shows the bike as having been delivered to the "International Hub" and USPS shows it as having been delivered to my office's mail room yesterday.
